Leftovers – Bangalore, September 2004

Pick up your freedom on the way out

Hope is hanging on the hatstand at the door.

That’s mine, kindly

Leave it behind.

Something tells me

I’ll be needing it sometime soon.

I found the space you wanted so

The stuff you kept telling me about

That I never understood then or now.

You might as well take this too

What am I ever going to do

With all this room?

Do me a favour, will you?

As you leave

Don’t turn back or call my name.

The way you do that makes my toes curl.

I can’t believe I’m smiling now.

That’s just the kind of thing you can do.

Leave me, smiling.
