'There are stories within stories, whispered in the quiet of the night, shouted above the roar of the day, and played out between lovers, enemies, strangers and friends. But all, all are fragile things made of just 26 letters arranged and rearranged…' – Neil Gaiman

‘Every time I hear that melody, something breaks inside.’ – Tom Waits

“No matter how many times I tell you she’ll break your heart, or how many times she does it, you’ll never give up. Why, you ask? Because you love her.”
- Great Expectations

desperate – friendships

“The world is filled with unlikely friendships. How did they begin? With one person desperately in need and another willing to lend a helping hand. When such kindness is offered we are finally able to see the worth of those we had previously written off and before we notice, a bond has formed, regardless of whether others can understand it.

Yes, unlikely friendships start up every day and no one understands this more than a lonely. In fact it is what they count on.”

“One day you might wake up and realize that a friend really isn’t a friend at all. The friendly conversations of each other’s lives might just come to an end without any warning or sign. The new words of conversation can turn into lies or stories to avoid telling the truth of what is really going on.

Its going to hurt and you might always wonder what happened or why they are acting this way. But in the end, the lesson to learn is that some people just aren’t who they betray themselves to be or at least who you thought they were.

desperate – faith

“Faith is a belief in something that cannot be proven, so we trust in the words of the only father we’ve ever known. We believe the promises of the woman who shares our bed. We rely on the example of dear friends to be better people. Yes, we all want to believe in those we’re closest to. But when there is doubt our faith begins to vanish. And fear rushes in to take its place.”

desperate – hope (I)

“In a world filled with darkness, we all need some kind of light. Whether it’s a great flame that shows us how to win back what we’ve lost, or a powerful beacon intended to scare away potential monsters, or a few glowing bulbs that reveal to us the hidden truth of our past. We all need something to help us get through the night.

Even if it’s just the tiniest glimmer of hope.”

'What is history anyway but a set of lies agreed upon?'

“We all have our reasons for rewriting history. Sometimes we need to provide ourselves alibis. Sometimes we wanna hurt someone who has hurt us and then there are times we just wanna spare ourselves embarrassment.

Of course, there are some who feel that to rewrite history is just another way to lie but what is history anyway but a set of lies agreed upon?”

desperate – tempation

“Temptation comes to all of us. Whether or not we succumb depends on our ability to recognize its disguise. Sometimes it arrives in the form of an old flame, flickering back to life. Or a new friend who could end up being so much more. Or a young child who awakens feelings we didn’t know we had.

And so we give in to temptation, all the while knowing come morning, we’ll have to suffer the consequences.”

desperate – baggage

“We all carry something with us. Of course, it’s nice if we travel with someone who can help lighten the load. But usually, it’s easier to just drop what we’ve been carrying so we can get home that much sooner assuming, of course, there will be someone there to greet us when we arrive.

Why do we clutch at this baggage, even when we’re desperate to move on? Because we all know there’s a chance we might let go too soon.”

desperate – smiles

“There is nothing more deceptive than a smile. And no one knows this better than the people who hide behind them. Some flash their teeth, as of a light warning to their enemies. Some put on faces to keep their tears from falling. Others wear silly grins, to mask their fear.

But then there is that rare smile, that is actually genuine. It’s a smile of a person that knows their troubles will soon be over.”

desperate – games

“All children love games. But children grow up and then they find new games to play: They pretend to be well so their families won’t worry, they lie to their lovers about where they go in the afternoon, they invent stories to hide the truth from their friends.

Yes, everyone has fun playing games… right up until the moment someone gets hurt.”

desperate – hope (II)

Every storm brings with it hope that somehow by morning, everything will be made clean again. And even the most troubling stains will have disappeared. Like the doubts over his innocence or the consequence of his mistake. Like the scars of his betrayal or the memory of his kiss.

So we wait for the storm to pass hoping for the best even though we know in our hearts some stains are so indelible, nothing can wash them away.’

desperate – prayers

“There is a widely read book which tells us everyone is a sinner. Of course not everyone feels guilt over the bad things they’ve done. In contrast there are those who assume more than their share of the blame. There are others who soothe their consciousness with small acts of kindness; but by telling themselves their sins were justified. Finally there are the ones who simply vow to do better next time and pray for forgiveness.

Sometimes their prayers are answered.”

desperately

“It’s an odd thing to look back on the world, to watch those I left behind. Each in her own way so brave, so determined, and so very desperate. Desperate to venture out, but afraid of what she’ll miss when she goes. Desperate to get everything she wants, even when she’s not exactly sure of what that is. Desperate for life to be perfect again, although she realizes it never really was. Desperate for a better future, if she can find a way to escape her past. I not only watch, I cheer them on, these amazing women. I hope so much they’ll find what they’re looking for. But I know not all of them will. Sadly, that’s just not the way life works.

Not everyone gets a happy ending.”

desperate – thoughts

“It’s a shocking moment for each of us. That moment we realize we are all alone in this world. The family we take for granted could one day abandon us. The husband we trust so implicitly might betray us. The daughter we love so deeply perhaps won’t return to us. And then we could end up all by ourselves.

There is much to be afraid of in this world. But what we fear has nothing to do with gruesome masks, or plastic spiders, or lifelike monsters. No, it’s the thoughts in our head that terrify us the most. What if she comes to regret her decision? What if he really is unhappy? What if the chance for love has pasted forever. How do we conquer these terrifying thoughts?

We start by reminding ourselves what does not kill us, just makes us stronger.”

desperate – couples

Have you met the perfect couple? The two soul mates whose love never dies? The two lovers whose relationship is never threatened. The husband and wife who trust each other completely. If you haven’t met the perfect couple, let me introduce you. They stand atop a layer of butter cream frosting.

The secret of their success? Well, for starters, they don’t have to look at each other.”

“The vow is simple, really. Those who take it promise “to stay together, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to honor and to cherish, forsaking all others until death do us part.”

Yes, the vow is simple. Finding someone worthy of such a promise is the hard part. But if we can, that’s when we begin to live happily ever after.”

desperate – pasts

“We think of the past as water under the bridge. The current that carries away the mistakes of our youth. The loves we lost. The addictions we gave into. The opportunities we threw away. But sooner or later reminders drift back into our lives of the mistakes we made and sins we committed.

We’ve all done something in our lives we’re ashamed of. Some of us have fallen for the wrong man. Some have let go of the right woman. There are those who have humiliated their parents and those who have failed their children. Yes, we’ve all made mistakes that diminish us and those we love.

But there is redemption if we try to learn from those mistakes and grow.

desperate – passion

“Passion-A force so potent we still remember it long after it fades away. A sensation so overwhelming that it can knock down walls we have built to protect our hearts. A feeling so intense it resurfaces, even though we have tried so hard to keep it buried.

Of all emotions, passion gives us a reason to live.”

Desperate Faith

Why do we fight so hard for control? Because we know to lose is to put our fate in the hands of others, and what could be more dangerous.

Why do we try to define people as simply good or simply evil? Because no one wants to admit that compassion and cruelty can live side by side in one heart. And that anyone is capable of anything.

– Desperate Housewives

"So, which "R" you filled with?" and Why I love… Kill Bill

THE BRIDE: Looked dead, didn’t I? But I wasn’t. But it wasn’t from lack of trying, I can tell you that. I’ve killed a hell of a lot of people to get to this point, but I have only one more. The last one. The one I’m driving to right now. The only one left. And when I arrive at my destination, I am gonna kill Bill.

“When fortune smiles on something as violent and ugly as revenge, it seems proof like no other that, not only does God exist, you’re doing his will.”

BILL: “There are consequences to breaking the heart of a murdering bastard…”

BUDD: So, which “R” you filled with?…
ELLE: When it comes to that bitch, I gotta lotta “R’s” in me. Revenge is one. Retribution is another. Rivalry is definitely one. But I got another “R” for that bitch you might be surprised to find out. Respect. But right at this moment, the biggest “R” I feel, is Regret. Regret that maybe the greatest warrior I have ever met, met her end at the hands of a bushwhackin, scrub, slacky piece of shit like you. The woman deserved better.”

Hattori Hanzo: “If on your journey, you should encounter God, God will be cut.”

THE BRIDE:
Before that strip turned blue, I was a woman, I was your woman. I was a killer, who killed for you. Before that strip turned blue, I would have jumped a motorcycle on to a speeding train …for you. But once that strip turned blue, I could no longer do any of those things. Not anymore. Because now I was a mother. A mother who only had one thought on her mind. Please don’t harm my baby. Can you understand that?… Everybody on this earth deserves to start with a clean slate. But with us - my daughter would be born into a world she shouldn’t be. Robbing her of the one thing everybody deserves. She would be born with blood stains. I had to choose. I chose her.”

THE BRIDE: “It’s mercy, compassion, and forgiveness I lack; not rationality.”

Hattori Hanzo: “Revenge is never a straight line. It’s a forest, And like a forest it’s easy to lose your way… To get lost… To forget where you came in.”

“There are consequences to breaking the heart of a murdering bastard…”

"Laugh. Laugh. God is the funniest man in the Universe."

“So I do know what it’s like… to love somebody who doesn’t deserve it.
Because they are all you have.”

“I want rules. And boundaries. Because what I’ve learned is that, without them, all life is, is a series of surprises.”

'How do you say goodbye to someone you can't imagine living without?'

‘…I didn’t say goodbye.
I didn’t say anything. I just walked away.’
-Elizabeth

‘A few years ago, I had a dream. It began in the summer and was over by the following spring. In between, there were as many unhappy nights as there were happy days. Most of them took place in this café. And then one night, a door slammed and the dream was over.’ - Jeremy

Love, loneliness and one lamentable lapse in judgment

“The point is we’re all connected… through love, through loneliness, through one lamentable lapse in judgment… All of us. We reach out from the darkness, from the alienation of modern life to form these connections. I think it’s a really profound statement about the nature of human existence.

Alice Pieszecki
(Leisha Hailey)

Why I love… Requiem for a Dream

Have you watched Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream? If you haven’t, you really should. And if you have, you will know why this scene just breaks you up inside.

Sara Goldfarb: I’m somebody now, Harry. Everybody likes me. Soon, millions of people will see me and they’ll all like me. I’ll tell them about you, and your father, how good he was to us. Remember? It’s a reason to get up in the morning. It’s a reason to lose weight, to fit in the red dress. It’s a reason to smile. It makes tomorrow all right. What have I got Harry, hm? Why should I even make the bed, or wash the dishes? I do them, but why should I? I’m alone. Your father’s gone, you’re gone. I got no one to care for. What have I got, Harry? I’m lonely. I’m old.

Harry Goldfarb: You got friends, Ma.

Sara Goldfarb
: Ah, it’s not the same. They don’t need me. I like the way I feel. I like thinking about the red dress and the television and you and your father. Now when I get the sun, I smile.
